Deputy Executive Secretary Vacancy at United Nations. The position is located in the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Geneva. Under the guidance of the Executive Secretary, the Deputy Executive Secretary, within the framework of the rules and regulations of the United Nations, assists the Executive Secretary in the planning, coordination, direction, and management of the UNECE program of work. The incumbent performs a critical role in engaging with member States, Permanent Missions, and other senior representatives of the United Nations.

Responsibilities

The incumbent of Deputy Executive Secretary Vacancy at United Nations will perform the following functions

  • Carries out the mandate of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in promoting economic cooperation and integration among the 56 UNECE Member States and with the rest of the world, in close cooperation with other organizations, both internal and external to the United Nations.
  • Assists the Executive Secretary in the execution of the UNECE program of work, with a particular focus on ensuring a cross-sectoral and strategic use of UNECE’s resources in supporting the Member States in efforts towards the 2030 Agenda.
  • Liaises with member Governments of the Commission, UN organs and specialized agencies and other organizations engaging with representatives of the UNECE Member States, Permanent Missions, and with intergovernmental bodies at UNHQ.
  • Advises the Executive Secretary on policy matters concerning the operation of the Secretariat and its work in the region.
  • Provides leadership to the development of innovative and change management initiatives.
  • Ensures UNECE’s compliance with intergovernmental and Secretariat-wide efforts and initiatives.
  • Similarly, provides substantive inputs for the preparation of various reports and studies and key statements and policy positions of the Secretariat and provides vision and policy direction to substantive staff responsible for drafting flagship UNECE products.
  • Oversees UNECE resource mobilization strategy, policy, and related implementation.
  • Acts as Chairperson of various standing or ad-hoc inter-divisional task forces set up by the Executive Secretary.
  • Provides insights and advice to the Executive Secretary on programmatic and budgetary performance and feedback on the performance of senior staff.
  • Furthermore, undertakes any other specific functions as assigned by the Executive Secretary.

Requirements 

Candidates must have the following qualifications for the vacancy of Deputy Executive Secretary at United Nations Office in Geneva

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in social sciences, economics, political science, international relations or related fields. But bachelor degree holders with two additional years of relevant work experience can also apply. However, a PhD is desirable.
  • In addition to that, at least fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in management and analysis of socio-economic development issues relevant to the European region.
  • Experience in policy formulation and in research and analysis as demonstrated by a record of relevant publications.
  • Similarly, experience in facilitation and conducting intergovernmental negotiating processes as well as experience in handling a multidisciplinary portfolio of tasks and duties.
