This post of Political Affairs Officer is in the Team supporting the implementation of Security Council resolution 2231 (2015). The incumbent reports directly to a Senior Political Officer. SCSOB provides support to subsidiary bodies established by the Security Council, particularly sanctions committees and groups/panels of experts who assist them in overseeing sanctions regimes.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and advice in support of DPPA’s work
  • Prepares analytical reports and summaries on sensitive matters of concern to the Security Council and other bodies
  • drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches, as well as other correspondence for senior UN officials.
  • Acts as a focal point for the collection and analysis of information on technical issues of assignment.
  • Also, reviews and monitors activities on the agenda of the Security Council and related to the maintenance of international peace and security, and assesses trends that might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues.
  • Analyses political and related events on the agenda of the Security Council to provide early warning advice to ASG/USG or other senior officials.
  • Arranges as well as participates in missions away from Headquarters.
  • Meets regularly with operational teams to brief them on the procedures, practices, and working methods of the Council.
  • In addition, provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters related to the maintenance of international peace and security and makes recommendations on actions to take.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international and regional organizations, and governments on coordination and policy matters

Basic Requirements

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, aerospace engineering, or a related field is required.

A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may also be accepted instead of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, non-proliferation, ballistic missile proliferation, or related area.
  • Research and analytical experience related to ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, or uncrewed aerial vehicles, including identification and tracing of components and subcomponents.
  • Experience working in an international organization is desirable.
  • Also, experience in preparing reports to intergovernmental bodies or Executive Boards is desirable.
  • Moreover, experience in monitoring and reporting on the implementation of Security Council resolutions is desirable.

Languages

For this post, you need fluency in English (both oral and written). Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise. Along with this, there may be a competency-based interview.
