Senior Economic Affairs Officer position is available in the Energy Connectivity Section, Energy Division (ED) in United Nations. The post is within the department of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The incumbent reports to the Director of the Energy Division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads or participates in the formulation, organization and management of mandated programmes of economic analysis
  • Likewise, leads or participates in the identification of new or emerging development issues on Asia-Pacific regional energy connectivity
  • Supervises a team undertaking the work on energy connectivity.
  • Similarly, supervises economic studies and analyses that cannot be undertaken internally.
  • Conceives, plans and manages expert group meetings, seminars and similar consultations that contribute to the finalization of the work unit’s outputs.
  • Furthermore, finalizes reports on development for issuance by the Division.
  • Prepares speeches for senior staff and makes presentations on energy issues for specialist or non-specialist audiences.
  • Moreover, provides direct substantive support on development issues to intergovernmental bodies
  • Develops and maintains relations with senior officials of member governments and ensures a response to requests for advice and/or assistance on economic issues and policies.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in engineering, energy economics, power system management, renewable energy or related field or, a relevant first-level university degree in the above fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience
  • Ph.D. degree in any of the above fields is desirable.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in conducting research and analytical work, policy design or formulation and implementation of programmes promoting regional energy connectivity, especially cross border power grid connectivity and market
  • Experience in developing and/or coordinating regulatory frameworks promoting energy connectivity is desirable.
  • Likewise, experience and involvement in development of regional energy markets in the Asia-Pacific region is desirable.
  • Research and analysis in the above fields as demonstrated through authored publications is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing as well as maintaining professional networks is desirable.
  • In addition, fluency in English
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
