Position: Technical Officer for Disaster Risk Management

About position

WHO(World Health Organization) is seeking caliber, enthusiastic and prompt Technical Officer for Disaster Risk Management. The position holder will deliver the following services within the framework of the delegated authority

  • Support the Programme Area Manager (PAM), CPI in implementing the regional program for promotion and strengthening risk reduction emergency preparedness and humanitarian action in emergencies.
  • Study and make recommendations on activities to strengthen national capacity for risk reduction and emergency preparedness;
  • Plan as well as develop training programs to strengthen the human resource capacity of the WHO Member States.
  • Support the PAM (CPI) in coordinating with countries in developing managerial systems and coordination mechanism in emergencies.
  • Promote public awareness and public information in risk reduction, emergency planning, and management.
  • Provide technical and managerial support whenever necessary. similarly, backstopping and gap-filling for emergency activities at any level of the Organization or scale of emergency; and
  • In addition, perform other related duties, as requested by supervisor, including the provision of support to other areas of work and teams or program areas within the WHE, as required.

Qualifications and skills

  • Advanced University degree (Master’s) in Public Health, disaster risk management or related areas
  • In addition to that, at least seven years of experience in the related field. Preferably in health emergency planning and management, mitigation, preparedness, relief and response operations, monitoring/evaluation, training, and policy formulation in disaster risk management.

Furthermore,

  • Knowledge of WHO procedures and practices at global, regional and country levels. Also, extensive knowledge of the UN system and of fundraising or communications or public relations.
  • Excellent Communication skills (verbal as well as written).
  • Ability to negotiate across multiple agencies to a common purpose.
  • Similarly, an ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct.
