Technical Officer position is available in the Polio Eradication (WSI) organization of WHO (World Health Organization). The programme aims to eradicate poliomyelitis, complete the interruption of wild or vaccine-derived poliovirus transmission globally, rapidly detect and interrupt outbreaks following the global withdrawal of oral polio vaccine and sustain surveillance to keep countries polio-free.

Benefits

The remunerations for this position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 71,332, a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4345 per month for the duty station indicated above. Furthermore, other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.

Responsibilities of the Position

  • Provide crucial support to outbreak preparedness activities, for instance, updating national preparedness plans, design and implementation of Polio Outbreak Simulation exercises and capacity building of national counterparts.
  • Support the coordination of outbreak response activities as part of the rapid response team
  • Likewise, provide technical support for coordination of SIA planning, implementation and monitoring in outbreak-affected countries and countries at risks
  • Develop HR and financial plans for outbreak responses; prepare funding proposals and identification of potential field staff.
  • Similarly, provide assistance to the national outbreak coordinator/ national teams by developing/updating budgeted outbreak response plans.
  • Conduct three and six month outbreak assessment exercises to evaluate status of outbreaks, effectiveness of response
  • In addition, provide technical guidance and support to the smooth running of the outbreak team, preparation and briefing of the GPEI Outbreak Preparedness and Response Task Team (OPRTT).

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Advanced level university degree in public health or related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of work experience in public health of which at least 4 years at the international level.
  • Relevant work experience in developing countries and in high risk settings.
  • Proven experience working in Outbreak Response assessment teams.
  • Moreover, excellent knowledge of polio eradication, with broad practical knowledge of polio immunization, AFP surveillance and their application
  • Experience in training and capacity building activities and demonstrated ability to work effectively with governments, and in challenging field conditions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Proven ability for technical writing and analysis.
