Applications are now open for funded Kino Der Kunst International Competition 2020 with up to €25,000 award. Visual artists from all over the world are welcome to submit their recent works to the International Competition that reflect this year’s topic “Forbidden Beauty”.
All entries must reveal an innovative approach to the various forms of cinematographic narration and demonstrate a high technical level. Movie theatres and museums all over Munich will present the International Competition as well as supporting programs, artists’ talks, symposia, and multi-channel installations. Its sensitive issue will be “Forbidden Beauty”.
KINO DER KUNST is a worldwide unique combination of film festival and art exhibition that investigates the connection between visual art and cinema; its programmatic focus lies on how cinematographic artists approach fiction and narration. The international competition presents cinematic works in which artists apply formal innovation and a highly aesthetic visual language without losing sight of the serious issues of our time.
Why is the concept of beauty so frowned upon in contemporary art? Is it afraid of that beautiful appearance that conceals problems but cannot seriously address them? The catchword of the moment is an allegedly necessary “aesthetic correctness” of well-meant political concerns. However, the political can also be negotiated aesthetically; without uncritically falling for the alleged power of the images of film and cinema or replacing the content with superficial retinal stimuli. Political art does not have to be formally mediocre or old-fashion, critical things can also be a package of aggressive beauty.
After the failure of the large-scale exhibitions of 2017 in Athens/Kassel and Venice, announced with much premature praise and leaving a stale taste in their often naïve political message (Documenta) or formal harmlessness (Venice Biennale); it is now a matter of nothing less than determining the status quo of contemporary art: how can it free itself from the dictate of commerciality that is lazy in terms of content without passing away informal insignificance? KINO DER KUNST 20 wants to show how the art of the moving image can take up the urgent themes of our time in a highly aesthetic visual language.
The winners of the Kino Det Kust International Competition will receive a cash award up to €25,000.
