 Bee Breeders is calling for submissions for a visitors center that would offer visitors a place to grab a drink, a snack, and learn a little more about the history of the incredible volcanic crater looming above their heads

The Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop competition is tasking participants with designing a coffee shop to be located at the base of the Hverfjall volcano in northern Iceland. 

Winning designs will be put forward for construction, so they should strike a balance of practical ideas and creative design that is sustainable, unique, and in keeping with the landscape.

Requirements

For this competition, architects and architecture enthusiasts should submit designs for a coffee shop that would be located at the base of the Hverfjall volcano.

The new coffee shop would need to include facilities for a new visitor center and a small exhibition room that would give visitors information about the volcano’s history. Participants may propose a complete demolition of the existing visitor’s center or include it as part of the new structure.

Project Proposal Requirements also include:

  • Cost-effective construction for remote areas
  • Resistant to heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind
  • Environmentally responsible and energy-efficient
  • Low maintenance in terms of effort and costs

Building Program

General Guideline

  • The maximum visitor capacity is 200 people
  • Recommended building area: 400–600 sq. meter

  • Coffee shop
  • Visitor center/information stand (1 workstation)
  • Small volcano exhibition hall/zone (40 sq. meter)
  • Toilets

Private

  • Office (2 workstations)
  • Storage (20-30 sq. meter)

Service Areas

  • Internal and external circulation spaces must be explained

Competition Site

The site is positioned on the northern side of the crater. Participants may propose a complete demolition of the existing visitor’s center or include it as part of the new structure.

Dates and Deadlines

  • Closing date for registration: 20 April 2022
  • Competition Q&A deadline: 27 April 2022
  • Closing date for project submission: 25 May 2022 (11:59 pm GMT+0)
  • Announcement of the winners: 06 July 2022
