NASW invites proposals from individuals or groups for grants of up to $5,000 to support projects and programs that will help science writers in their professional lives and benefit the field of science writing. Projects must be aligned with NASW’s mission and should be accessible to U.S.-based science writers.Since 2010, the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) has provided funding for projects aimed at supporting and advancing science writers, with a total investment of nearly $600,000. This grant program honors the legacy of Peggy Girshman, a former NASW board member and a founding member of the NASW Grants Committee. A dedicated advocate for science writers, Girshman played a crucial role in fostering opportunities for professionals in the field. Through this program, NASW continues to uphold her commitment to empowering science writers by funding initiatives that enhance their work and professional growth.

The Grants Committee encourages creative thinking, and so, as in past years, the guidelines for Idea Grant proposals are consciously broad. However, the committee prioritizes applications that propose novel projects, events, or resources that the NASW grants program has not supported in the past. Successful past applications have demonstrated how funded work will be sustained beyond the award period.
Submit your proposal through Submittable by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, April 4, 2025.
