The NOMIS and Science Young Explorer Award aims to recognize bold young researchers regardless of the research outcome.

Successful applicants will have made significant advances in applying techniques developed in one domain to address questions in another.

Award

The Grand Prize Winner Receives:

  • a cash prize in the amount of US $15,000,
  • get travel and accommodation to the award ceremony, if applicable.
  • In addition, the Grand Prize winner will get an invitation to present a proposal for funding to the NOMIS board
  • receive a 5-year digital subscription to Science
  • Also, have the winning essay published in Science, in print, and online.

Runner(s) Up Receives:

  • A cash prize in the amount of US$5,000
  • Also, travel and accommodation to the award ceremony, if applicable.
  •  A 5-year digital subscription to Science
  • In addition, have their winning essay published in Science online.

The selected Grand Prize Award winner is automatically eligible to submit a funding proposal on the basis of their essay to NOMIS.

Moreover, all federal, state, and local taxes, and any other costs and expenses associated with the receipt or use of the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner.

Eligibility

  • Entrants must be thirty-five (35) years of age or younger
  • They also must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. at the time of entry.
  • In addition, the award will be granted annually to one young scientist based on work done in the past 3 years.

Application Procedure

The entrant must submit the following items:

  • A completed Entry Form.
  • An essay, written by the entrant, describing his/her/their research at the intersection of the life and social sciences, showing interdisciplinary work. The essay must not exceed 1,000 words in length.
  • Also, a one-page letter of recommendation from his or her postdoctoral adviser, supervisor, or other senior colleagues who are familiar with the entrant’s work.
  • A Curriculum Vitae that includes the following:
    1. Full citations of papers that the entrant has published on the research described in the essay
    2. Academic as well as professional awards and honors that the entrant has received
    3. Relevant professional experience
  • In addition, copies of two of the entrant’s papers that are most relevant to the essay.

The Entry Form and additional submission materials must be submitted electronically through the prize management system here.

Timeline

  • February-June 2022: Deadline for Compilation and Review of Submissions
  • July-September 2022: Selection of Award Winner(s)
  • November 2022: Announcement of  Award Winner(s)
  • 2023:  Award Ceremony

Judging Procedures

Science editors will screen the essays. A committee of scientists will select winners from the finalists and will decide on the winners.  The essays will be judged on their scientific quality and the clarity and style of writing.
