The Royal Society Africa Prize recognizes research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the sciences. The medal is of bronze, awarded annually and is accompanied by a gift of £2,000.
The Prize will make a grant of £15,000 to the Recipient for a research project.
It will also include £2,000 as a personal prize for the Recipient.
The Recipients will also get a specially struck commemorative medal. they should receive the Prize in person at a ceremony at the Royal Society, except in exceptional circumstances such as ill-health.
Eligibility
The Prize is intended for researchers at an early stage of their research career with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize.
The research must be based in Africa.
In addition, the project and nominee should be linked with an African centre of excellence.
Moreover, the individual should have not yet reached full Professorship status.
The Recipients must notify the Royal Society of any change in their status or location.
Nominators should submit two referees for the nominee after the nomination deadline. Referees should be as independent as possible. The referees should also neither be a member of the relevant selection committee nor the Council of the Royal Society.
The recipient of the Prize should submit a report after 6 months and again after 12 months detailing the progress of their research, the progress of their project as well as the expenditure of the Grant.
Moreover, the Recipient of the Prize may not use the funds to support their remuneration or as a salary for research assistants.
Purpose of the Grant
Grants are for the research project as detailed in the online form. The Royal Society should be notified of any alteration to this project.
The candidate should use the grant on a research project which has the potential to continue after the 12 months of the Grant.
It also aims to promote capacity building within Africa.
