The Canadian Academy of Architecture for Justice sponsors the Modern Police Station, an international design competition to symbolize the changes, and positively enhance the connection between policing and the community.
In the context of social unrest, violent protests, easy access to guns, the decanting of mental health services and the legalization of marijuana, society’s standard institutions and approaches are being challenged and questioned. Police often find themselves on the front lines of these issues and serve and protect in a complex and changing environment. New skill sets, changing laws and evolving expectations need a commensurate evolution in building typology to support them. Hence, the competition is an opportunity to change the traditional working procedure of the Police
The competition welcomes submissions from either studio groups or individuals. A jury of police and architects with experience in the field will evaluate the design. Further, the Modern Police Station competition encourages the participants to explore a wide spectrum of architectural responses from functional and practical at one end to philosophical and social at the other end. The design may include ways in which this building could be integrated into the community. Further, the building should be a catalyst for a positive relationship between the police and the community they serve.
A panel of jury will decide the winner of ‘the Modern Police Station’ competition. Moreover, there will be three winners. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize worth $3,000 CDN. Further, the candidates whose design comes at the second and third place will win the prize amount of $1,000 CDN.
This is an international competition. Hence, students worldwide are welcome to enter the competition.
To apply, the interested candidates must, at first, meet the eligibility criteria. Once eligible, the candidates may apply by at first registering for the competition online before the deadline. After registering, the applicants can upload their design. However, the uploading content should not be over 10MB.
The deadline for the submission of the design work for ‘the modern police station’ competition is June 16, 2019.
