The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025 is the world’s oldest and most prestigious international writing contest for school students, organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883. Open to students from Commonwealth countries, it invites young writers to share their ideas on the 2025 theme: “Our Commonwealth Journey.”
The competition is free to enter and divided into two age categories:
- Junior (under 14 years)
- Senior (14–18 years)
Winners will receive gold, silver, or bronze awards, with top winners earning a fully funded trip to London. All participants receive a certificate of participation. Topics for Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025 (QCEC2025):
Senior Category Topics (14-18 years):
- National legends and folklore can take us on a journey through history and culture. Retell a famous folklore from your own or another Commonwealth country in a surprising way.
- Equal access to education is enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter as one of the key values and aspirations that unite the Commonwealth. While the Commonwealth has come a long way on the journey towards this, there is still progress to be made. Imagine a Commonwealth in which everyone has the same access to education.
- From tiny seeds to large redwoods, trees and plants experience changes and growth throughout their life cycles. Write a story about the life journey of a plant growing in the center of your community; what does it experience?
- Books can take us on journeys to the wildest and most unexpected places! Write about a time a book took you on a journey and how did it affect you.
Junior Category Topics (under 14 years):
- Commonwealth states range from small island nations like Nauru to larger countries like India. Write an account of a sea voyage from one Commonwealth country to a small island Commonwealth nation. What do you see, who do you meet?
- Learning new information can take us on journeys to new places. Write about a time you learned something interesting about a different Commonwealth country from your own.
- You embark on a very special journey when you discover a secret door that takes you into your favorite book! What happens next?
- October 2024 saw Commonwealth leaders travel to Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Imagine what an animal CHOGM would look like! Which animals travel there? What do they discuss?

Eligibility Criteria for the QCEC 2025
- Applicants of the Senior Category should be between 14-18 years (born between 23 May 2006 and 23 May 2011) and in the Junior Category, applicants should be under 14 years of age (born on or after 23 May 2011).
- The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition is an international annual writing contest for students and schools.
- The essay entries must be submitted in the English language. Any other language is not accepted.
- The word count for Senior Category is 1500, while for the Junior Category, it is 750 words.
- The essays should not contain the personal details of the applicants. Personal details will be given in the application process.
- The essay topics must be selected from those topics provided in the Senior and Junior categories.
- Plagiarism is not allowed, and plagiarized essays will automatically be rejected.
