World of 7 Billion – Student Video Contest 2017-2018  

Population Connection is hosting the World of 7 Billion student video contest for 2017–2018 and invites students around the world to participate. The World of 7 Billion contest is a project of the Population Education program, provider of K-12 classroom resources and professional development opportunities. The contest is run every school year. The World of 7 Billion contest helps bring technology and creativity into middle and high school classes worldwide. Students are challenged to create a short video connecting world population growth and one of three global challenges: Advancing Women and Girls, Feeding 10 Billion or Preventing Pollution.

Create a short video – up to 60 seconds – about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Advancing Women and Girls, Feeding 10 Billion, or Preventing Pollution. All videos must include:

a) how population growth impacts the issue

b) at least one idea for a sustainable solution.

Consider narrowing your focus by concentrating on a subtheme within your topic. Possible subthemes include:

  • Advancing Women and Girls -access to education, gender equality,
    women in government, women’s health, child marriage
  • Feeding 10 Billion -hunger, food waste, resource and energy use, deforestation, pollution
  • Preventing Pollution -impacts on air, water, and land, climate change, human and wildlife health, ecosystem destruction

Award

Students can win up to USD 1,000 in each of the three (3) competition categories. The total prize money fund of the 2017–2018 contest is USD 7,500.

Eligibility

  • This contest is open to all students grades 6–12. Students may work together in groups or submit entries as individuals;
  • The length of the video should not exceed 60 seconds (one minute).
