The BIOFIN Initiative (Biodiversity Finance Initiative), led by UNDP, is seeking a highly motivated National Specialist to join its team in Mexico City. In this on-site role, you will play a pivotal part in advancing sustainable biodiversity finance strategies, working closely with government stakeholders, private sector partners, and local communities. Project Planning & Execution
Coordinate technical and budgetary planning with UNDP’s Country Office and BIOFIN’s global team.
Ensure efficient implementation of activities, monitor progress, and prepare financial/substantive reports.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
Manage relationships with strategic partners (public/private sectors) and communicate project results.
Represent BIOFIN in national/international forums and develop outreach materials.
Team Leadership & Coordination
Supervise BIOFIN Mexico’s technical team and serve as the primary liaison with national counterparts and BIOFIN’s global network.
Oversee specialized consultancies and knowledge-sharing with other BIOFIN countries.
Biodiversity Finance Solutions
Design and implement innovative financing mechanisms (e.g., carbon pricing, ecosystem-based solutions) at national/subnational levels.
Align policies with international frameworks (TNFD, ISSB, SBTN) and support federal environmental goals.
Resource Mobilization & Policy Advising
Develop new funding mechanisms, analyze financial regulations, and provide technical advice to the government.
Adapt global BIOFIN initiatives for Mexico and document lessons learned.
Reporting & Integration
Consolidate programmatic data for UNDP Country Office and BIOFIN global reports.
Document best practices to inform decision-making.
The specialist will report to UNDP Mexico’s Environment, Energy, and Resilience Program Officer and collaborate with BIOFIN’s regional/global teams.

Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Economics, Finance, International Relations, Political Science, or a related field is required; or
Bachelor’s degree in the above fields plus 2 additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s.
5 years (with Master’s) or 7 years (with Bachelor’s) of experience in project management, design, monitoring, and evaluation.
Experience working with national/international experts, financial institutions, and leading results-driven teams.
Knowledge of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (e.g., CBD, UNFCCC).
Familiarity with international environmental/biodiversity funds.
Understanding of climate and nature-related financial disclosure frameworks (e.g., TNFD, ISSB).
5+ years in environmental/sustainable finance, including proven experience in developing financial instruments (CV must demonstrate this).
Knowledge of environmental/climate risk integration principles and methodologies, particularly in Mexico’s banking and financial sector.
Familiarity with Mexico’s budgetary process.
Experience in drafting publications, reports, and presentations (must provide samples if available).
Work experience in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills, with a results-driven approach (must demonstrate through team management experience).
Fluent Spanish (required).
Advanced English (required).
Proficiency in another language (considered an advantage).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project planning, and monitoring tools.
