Paid Job at UNESCO, Paris is for the position of junior translators. The Chinese Translation Unit is responsible for the provision of translation services to the Organization’s governing bodies, central services and programme sectors with the paramount objective of maintaining multilingualism. Under the overall authority of the Director of the Bureau of Management and Support Services, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Chinese Translation Unit, the Translator will be expected to perform the following responsibilities:
Translate, on-screen, official documents for governing bodies and material for periodicals and publications, general or specialized (education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication, administration, etc.) from English and, when sufficiently qualified, from French into Chinese, carry out or request necessary referencing;
Translate, on-screen, official documents for governing bodies and material for periodicals and publications, general or specialized (education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication, administration, etc.) from Chinese into English, carry out or request necessary referencing;
Minute-write and edit summary and verbatim records at sessions of governing bodies and other meetings;
When sufficiently experienced, and if required, translate on a self-revised basis, revise and edit on-screen documents drafted in Chinese, and participate in reading committees;
Participate in the Units terminology work;
Supports additional activities that may be required to ensure the success of the Chinese Translation Unit.
Eligibility
Advanced university degree (Master’s level or equivalent) in languages, translation or a closely related field.
Work Experience
Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in translation in a governmental or international organization or similar organization, of which preferably one (1) year acquired at the international level.
Skills/Competencies
Good knowledge of UNESCO’s major fields of action (education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information);
Willingness to engage in self-learning by keeping abreast of current affairs and of new developments at UNESCO and in the UN system;
Ability to work quickly and accurately, often under pressure;
Ability to maintain good working relations in a multicultural environment and to work effectively in a team;
Good IT skills including proficiency in word processing, good knowledge of language technologies and of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) or similar tools.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of Chinese (principal language), very good knowledge of English and good knowledge of French.
Desirable Qualifications
Work Experience
Experience of translation in an organization of the United Nations system;
Experience in using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools.
Skills/Competencies
Specialisation in one or more of the Organization’s fields of competence (education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information).
Languages
Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Russian or Spanish).
