This class provides a series of Python programming exercises intended to explore the use of numerical modeling in the Earth system as well as climate sciences. This class assumes that you are new to Python programming (and this is indeed a great way to learn Python!), but that you will be able to pick up an elementary knowledge of Python syntax from another class or from on-line tutorials.

Critical Issues in Urban Education

This course explores a set of critical issues in the education and educational reform space, with a focus on aspects of the field that have sparked controversy and also, polarized views. It will dig into these debates, situating them within the larger history of public education and school reform, and in addition, considering the viewpoints, the evidence, and translation of issues into educational policy. Moreover, it will consider three broad topics in this course:

  • Federal Strategies in School Reform: How has the federal government legislated and incented public school reform?
  • School Choice: How does school choice aim to improve schools?
  • Accountability: What is the history of accountability in American public schooling? What are the policies and practices associated with accountability?

This course begins on March 11, 2019.

Internet Giants: The Law and Economics of Media Platforms

This seven-week course will explore the relationship between law and technology with a strong focus on the law of the United States with some comparisons to laws around the world, especially in Europe. Above all, the course will explore seven topics:

  • Microsoft
  • Google Emerges (and the World Responds)
  • Likewise, Smartphones
  • Nondiscrimination and Network Neutrality
  • The Day the Music Died
  • Video
  • The Mediated Book

This course begins on February 25, 2019.
