Applications are open for the 2021 Scholarship in Estonia – Fully Funded offered by the University of Tartu. The scholarship is open to all nationalities and the deadline is 15th May 2021.

Benefits of 2021 Scholarship in Estonia

Tuition fee and scholarships

  • There is no tuition fee for Ph.D. studies at the University of Tartu. Full-time Ph.D. students receive a doctoral allowance of 660 euros per month plus an additional performance stipend of 400 euros per month (both are tax-free payments). The stipends are renewed periodically based on the outcomes of Ph.D. attestation reviews. For more information, see here.

Health insurance

  • All Ph.D. students who receive a doctoral allowance are provided with Estonian national health insurance (Haigekassa). Doctoral allowance can be paid out as soon as a temporary residence permit (non-EU students) or temporary right of residence (EU students) has been obtained. Health insurance coverage is available for the full nominal study period of Ph.D. studies (4 years).

Eligibility

General eligibility requirements

  • Master’s degree or a corresponding level of education.
  • Doctoral thesis project/motivation letter (depending on the program) and an entrance interview.
  • All eligible applicants are ranked and ranking is based on the results of entrance examinations and other program-specific requirements set for a particular Ph.D. curriculum.
  • Admission is regulated by the document Admission rules in Doctoral Studies.

Language requirements for 2021 Scholarship in Estonia

The language of instruction for most of the doctoral programs in English. However, we have two doctoral programs, where learning Estonian during the program is compulsory – it means some of the instruction takes place in Estonian. These programs are Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics and Law.

Yet, all international applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency at a satisfactory level. Please note that these are the only tests and exemptions accepted by the University of Tartu.

Applicants to the Russian and Slavonic Philology Ph.D. program must provide proof of Russian language proficiency at a satisfactory level. Proof of English language proficiency is not required.
