Applications call for American Economics Association Fellowship 2020/21

Summary 

The American Economics Association for Comparative Economic Studies calls application for Fellowship for pre-doctoral candidates in the academic year 2020-2021. The fellowship aims to encourage research on comparative economics and to recognize the fundamental contributions of Gerard Roland to the field. Basically, the recipient of the fellowship will pursue academic research that is primarily related to

• Development/Transition Economics
• Comparative Institutions
• Political Economy
• Economics of Culture.

Other topics emphasizing theory, methods or implications of comparative economics are eligible too. The American Economic Association encourages applications from the students working in related fields.

Fundings

The American Economic Association awards the fellowship to one candidate for the academic year 2020-2021. The fellowship will provide a stipend of $35,000 and, $5,000 to support the costs of data acquisition and travel to research meetings. In addition to that, it will cover the fellow’s tuition at his or her home institution, up to a limit of $14,000 for the academic year. Fellows may choose to reduce their stipend to fund a larger data purchase or other research support.

Eligibilities 

To be eligible for fellowship support, an applicant must be enrolled as a full-time Ph.D. student at an accredited college or university. Candidates must also have advanced to dissertation candidacy status by the start of the fellowship period. The ACES strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans. The selection panel consisting of Yuriy Gorodnichenko (University of California, Berkeley; chair), Elizabeth Brainerd (Brandeis University), Georgy Egorov (Northwestern University), Scott Rozelle (Stanford University) and Noam Yuchtman (London School of Economics) will review the applications. The panel will assess each applicant’s potential to make an important contribution to key questions in comparative economics. The panel will also strive to recruit a diverse group of award recipients, including, to the extent possible, individuals from underrepresented minority groups and from a variety of academic institutions.

American Economics Association 

The American Economic Association (AEA) is a learned society in the field of economics, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. It publishes one of the most prestigious academic journals in economics: the American Economic Review. The purposes of the Association are: 1) The encouragement of economic research, especially the historical and statistical study of the actual conditions of industrial life; 2) The issue of publications on economic subjects; 3) The encouragement of perfect freedom of economic discussion. The Association as such will take no partisan attitude, nor will it commit its members to any position on practical economic questions.
