Canada Graduate Scholars—Master’s program (CGS M)

The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative provides financial support to meritorious Indigenous students who have applied to the Canada Graduate Scholars—Master’s program (CGS M).

$17,500 Indigenous Scholars Award for 12 months
$5,000 Indigenous Scholars Supplement for 12 months

To be eligible for the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s Program (CGS M) students must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by the university issuing the transcripts, in the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent). At the University of Calgary, a student must have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the last 2 years of study. Each institution has their own definition of first-class average. The University of Calgary does not convert scales.

Selection process

Each CGS M application will be reviewed by three committee members at the institutional level and assessed according to the Selection Criteria. Committee members will be assigned to applications based on field of research (health, natural sciences and engineering and social sciences and humanities).

SSHRC and NSERC staff will review the self-identification documentation to ensure that applicants have provided the requested information.

While the CGS M merit review process is used to determine funding recipients under the Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative, should there be more applications than funds available, a selection committee will be formed by SSHRC and NSERC to rank the CGS M applications eligible for the award and supplement using the CGS M selection criteria.
