The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards fully funded PhD fellowships to outstanding junior scientists who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project of approximately 3 years in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory. The Fellowship aims to promote basic research in biomedicine by providing the best young, up-and-coming scientists with comprehensive support during their PhD phase.
The fellowship comprises a competitive monthly stipend that is initially payable for 2 years. Further, the fellow can extend the fully funded Boehringer PhD Fellowships for up to another 12 months. The fellowship also supports participation in international scientific conferences. In addition, fellowship holders receive personal support, seminars to discuss their projects, communication training, and alumni meetings, and thus can become part of a worldwide network.
The scientists in the Board of Trustees and the external peer reviewer evaluate applications according to the following three criteria:

Applicants must clearly label the CD should with the applicant’s first name, family name and email address and contain documents 1-7, preferably in one PDF file. Though it is quite old-fashioned, in this call we need a CD with the electronic version of your application (we are currently updating our online application system).
Applicants must submit both the online application and mail on respective deadlines of each year (date as per postmark for the paper version): 1 February, 1 June, 1 October
