Details

A FLAS fellowship for South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) covers the full tuition amount as well as a fixed stipend of $2,500. The Department of Education has prioritized students applying for the 2nd or 3rd year of study for FLAS funding. Students may be granted an exception to allow study of the beginning level if the student has achieved at least intermediate proficiency in another language of the world area of specialization or has other extenuating circumstances. Students who are applying for beginning-level language study will need to justify why an exception should be granted as part of their application. The Department of Education has final say as to whether an exception for first year study will be granted.

Funding Overview

All applicants for funding must have completed the SASLI general application by the funding application deadline in order to be considered for SASLI funding competitions. It is completely acceptable to send the same statement of purpose for both funding and general applications, but they must be submitted to SASLI separately.

Students are encouraged to apply for as many funding opportunities as they are eligible for and will not be penalized for applying for multiple awards. If students are selected to receive more than one award, SASLI staff will work with individuals to ensure the best funding package possible.

Eligibility

  •  Fellowships are awarded based on a national competition and are open to graduate students who are currently enrolled* in a degree program and who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Thus, non-students and undergraduate** students are ineligible for SASLI FLAS fellowships.
  • The same is true for international students who are not permanent residents of the U.S.
  • If applicants are not eligible for a FLAS, please look into Fee Remission option.

Important Things to Remember

  • FLAS fellowships awarded by SASLI are only available for study at SASLI.
  • Sanskrit is not eligible for SASLI FLAS awards.
  • SASLI FLAS awards cannot be used for Distance Learning.
  • There is no lifetime limit on the number of SASLI FLAS awards applicants may receive.
  • Summer FLAS awards from SASLI are made possible through the consortium of South Asia National Resource Centers. If applicant’s institution offers a FLAS competition, they recommend that applicants apply for a FLAS at applicants home institution, though applicants are welcome to also apply to SASLI.
  • FLAS awardees are obliged to complete certain reporting requirements as set forth by the Department of Education. The Center funding the study will work with students to ensure all requirements are met. Failure to complete the requirements may result in the need to repay the FLAS award.
  • Leaving the program early may result in being required to pay back some or all of the FLAS award.
