Applications are open for the Garden Club of America (GCA) Summer Scholarship in Field Botany 2025. The program aims to support students’ field studies and offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience beyond the regular course of study.
In the late 1990s, the Garden Club of America’s Scholarship Committee observed a troubling trend of declining or consolidated botany programs in colleges and universities across the country. To address this issue and encourage the study of plant sciences, the committee proposed the introduction of a summer scholarship focused on field botany. Beginning in 2000, Mrs. Henry Streeter, a dedicated horticulturist and member of the North Shore Garden Club of Massachusetts, generously offered her support to fund this initiative. The scholarship aims to provide students with immersive experiences in botany, allowing them to engage directly with plant life and gain practical skills in the field. By fostering a new generation of botanists, this program seeks to cultivate a deep appreciation for plant science and enhance the importance of botanical education in the broader context of environmental conservation.
