The University of Queensland (UQ) offers the Joan Lambrides Scholarship, which is open to students of all nationalities pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Applications for this scholarship must be submitted by July 31, 2024.
Established in 2020 by Gary Lambrides with the support of Alumni Friends, the Joan Lambrides Scholarship recognises Gary’s mother, Joan Lambrides, who attended UQ as a mature-age student, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. Splitting her early years between war-torn Greece and Australia, she never quite felt at home in either country. Despite this, she was a lover of languages and music, and inspired her children and those around her to cultivate these interests as well.
The Joan Lambrides Scholarship is intended for undergraduate students (including honours programs) pursuing the languages and arts. Joan was surrounded by language textbooks, and picked up several languages during her life. She was a musical aficionado, filling their home with music from Greece and around the world. Her love of literature across multiple languages imbued her children with that same spirit. Her children admire her resilience and love of beauty despite the hardship she experienced and upheaval she witnessed during her life. The scholarship hopes to foster those same passions and support other students facing their own challenges in life.

Eligibility
- The student must be enrolled in one of the undergraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, including the honors program, or in a dual program that combines any of the faculty’s undergraduate programs.
- The candidate must be able to demonstrate financial need.
