The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 is now accepting applications from young and accomplished leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa. The flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), the fellowship provides selected participants with an intensive six-week leadership development experience in the United States.

For 2027, approximately 550 young African leaders are expected to participate in Leadership Institutes hosted by U.S. colleges and universities. The program will provide opportunities for professional development, networking, cultural exchange, and engagement with U.S. experts and organizations.

What Does the Fellowship Offer?

The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 offers selected young African leaders a six-week Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university. Fellows will develop leadership and professional skills while building connections with other emerging leaders from across Africa and the United States.

The 2027 Fellowship will focus on three areas:

• Business and Trade
• Emerging Technologies
• Governance and Security

Participants will have opportunities to engage with U.S. professionals, organizations, and community leaders while developing knowledge and networks that can support their future work.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must generally be 25 to 35 years old by October 13, 2026, although exceptional candidates aged 21–24 may also be considered. Applicants must be citizens and residents of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country, have relevant leadership or professional experience, and demonstrate English-language proficiency.

Applicants must also be eligible for a U.S. J-1 visa and must not have previously participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
