The Department of Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking applicants for the Bentson Fellowship in Radiation Oncology to commence in the Summer of 2022. This postdoctoral fellowship program enables promising translational cancer researchers to develop the experience, record of success, model systems, funding support, and preliminary data needed to successfully launch an independent research career.

Candidates on this Research Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin will receive a travel/book fund to facilitate participation in training opportunities that may include research meetings, coursework, and workshops.

Principal Duties

Bentson Laboratory Research Fellows will function primarily in laboratory and translational research settings . They will have direct involvement in many or all of the following activities; all under the supervision of UW faculty mentors.

  • Performance of cancer research studies in the laboratory setting.
  • Development of new laboratory assays, model systems, and techniques for cancer research.
  • Design and write clinical treatment protocols, IRB applications, investigator-initiated trial proposals (IITs), and/or FDA Investigational New Drug (IND) applications.
  • Evaluation and design of treatment strategies for cancer patients.
  • Clinical data evaluation and analysis of results from cancer patient treatments.
  • Participation in Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards and Oncology Grand Rounds.
  • Participation in cancer research seminar series and lab meetings.
  • Formal coursework in Research Ethics, Biostatistics/Bioinformatics, Leadership, Lab Management, Clinical Trial and Research Design.
  • Participation in Scientific Writing and Grant Writing Workshops.
  • Design and writing of grant applications for cancer research funding including NIH K awards and other early career transition awards.
  • Participation in teaching of undergraduate, medical, or graduate students and/or participation in workshops to improve teaching skills.
  • Direct mentorship of research personnel/students and/or participation in workshops to improve mentorship of research personnel.
  • Participate as a speaker in institutional, regional, and international research meetings and/or participation in workshops to improve formal presentation skills.
  • Development of advanced skills with brachytherapy, radiosurgery, MRI-guided adaptive radiotherapy
  • Manuscript preparation summarizing research study results.
  • Guidance and mentorship in laboratory start-up and contract negotiation.

Requirements

Candidates must have the following qualifications for this Research Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin

  • Candidates must have completed their MD, MD/PhD, or PhD.
  • Fellows do not have a formal requirement for clinical service but are able to engage in clinic care and develop areas of advanced clinical specialization if desired.
  • No additional work experience needed.
