Stanford University Fisher Family Summer Fellows Program 2027 in the USA

The Fisher Family Summer Fellows Program on Democracy and Development 2027 at Stanford University, USA, is an international leadership training opportunity for experienced professionals working to strengthen democracy, development, and the rule of law. Hosted by Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), the three-week program brings together influential practitioners from countries where democratic institutions, human development, and good governance face significant challenges.

The program is intended for mid-career leaders who are actively contributing to democratic development in their home countries. Participants learn from Stanford faculty, exchange practical experiences with international peers, and develop connections that can support their future work.

Fellowship Benefits

Selected fellows participate in an intensive three-week program at Stanford University from July 18 to August 6, 2027.

Benefits include:

  • Accommodation: Stanford provides accommodation for the duration of the program.
  • Meals: Meals during the fellowship are covered.
  • Local transportation: Transportation costs associated with the program are provided.
  • Academic training: Participate in seminars, discussions, and learning sessions with Stanford faculty and experienced practitioners.
  • International networking: Connect with democratic leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives, and development professionals from different countries.
  • Leadership development: Strengthen practical knowledge and leadership capacity in democracy, economic development, governance, and the rule of law.
  • Alumni network: Join a global community of former fellows working to advance democratic change.

Funding note: This is a partially funded opportunity, not a fully funded fellowship for every participant. Fellows are generally expected to cover their round-trip airfare. A limited travel fund may provide partial assistance to applicants who demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should carefully review the official criteria before applying. Candidates generally must:

  • Be at least 28 years old at the start of the program in July 2027.
  • Have at least 10–12 years of professional experience in democracy, development, public policy, civil society, economic development, or the rule of law.
  • Hold a leadership role and demonstrate meaningful professional contributions in their field.
  • Be from and currently reside in a country where democracy is not well established, subject to the program’s eligibility rules.
  • Be actively working in a relevant professional field rather than enrolled in a full-time university degree program.
  • Demonstrate strong written and spoken English proficiency.
  • Have the professional background and academic readiness to participate in intensive seminars and discussions.

Applicants do not necessarily need a university degree, although most previous fellows have held at least a bachelor’s degree.

Required Application Documents

Applicants should prepare an English-language CV or résumé of one to three pages, responses to the application essay questions, a video submission, financial information, and at least two letters of recommendation.
