Applications are open for the National Press Foundation Widening the Pipeline Fellowship 2025. U.S. journalism has an ongoing diversity crisis. There simply are not enough reporters and editors of color to inform, engage and accurately reflect their society. To combat this, the National Press Foundation’s Widening the Pipeline Fellowship will provide expenses-paid trainings in Washington, D.C., as well as virtual workshops to support journalists of color staying in – and leading – the newsrooms of tomorrow.
In its first two years, Widening the Pipeline trained 45 journalists from across America, offering skills development, mentoring, and peer support to help them thrive in newsrooms, where people of color hold less than a quarter of positions. Many early-career journalists of color often leave the industry due to a lack of mentorship and support, preventing them from gaining the strategies and skills needed to make meaningful contributions to their communities. This program aims to bridge that gap, providing crucial guidance and fostering the next generation of diverse journalists in the U.S. media landscape.
