UN Social Science Internships is open for application. The UN Internship is located in the Office of Director of the Social Development Policy Division (SDPD) at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa. The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Director. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The intern will work for five days per week under the supervision of the Director.

The Social Development Policy Division consists of three sections, namely, the Social Policy, Urbanization and Gender Sections, which cover social thematic areas such as social protection, employment, demography, youth, ageing, migration, health, disability, and urbanization, while the gender component is mainstreamed across all areas of work.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Director, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:

  • Assist the Director with managing the work schedule and follow up with sections on tasks assigned by the Director;
  • Further, Assist with work across all sections including compiling information, collecting data, undertaking analysis, developing briefing notes and proof reading documents when required;
  • Likewise, Assist with organizing and coordinating meetings, workshops, conferences, and preparing coverage reports;
  • Assist with developing press releases, and generating and disseminating materials on social media;
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director to ensure the delivery of the Division programme of work.

Planning & Organizing:

  • Likewise, Identifies priority activities and assignments and adjusts priorities as required;
  • Further, Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work;
  • Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning;
  • Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary;
  • Also, Uses time efficiently.

Education

To qualify for an internship under the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applications must meet one of the following educational requirements:
    • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • However, it is not essential for the applicants to have professional work experience
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. However, knowledge of another UN language, preferably French, is an advantage.
