For the 15th global edition of the Metro Photo Challenge, Metro is proud to present the 2019 photography contest that gathers more than 100 participating cities from Europe, Asia, and America.

This year Metro Photo Challenge will focus on moments that take your breath away, to those moments that, for their strength, beauty or impact, make us, for a moment run out of breath #MetroMoments. Participants are welcome to participate from October 1st to November 28th in this incredible photographic journey.

Like every year there will be 2 stages: National and Global. In the National stage, in each country, 3 winners will be chosen by votes while 3 by a local jury. These will go to the next round. Further, in the next round (global stage) the 6 selected from each country go to the final where a global jury chooses the winner of the Big Prize.

Winners of Metro Photo Challenge 2019

One big prize winner selected from the global stage will get an opportunity to visit Africa for a photo tour. The winner can choose either to visit South Africa or Kenya for 7 days to make a photoshoot, which will be published in a special edition of Metro (online and offline).

The Grand Prize has a total value of around €3,500 which includes: Round-trip from the country of origin of the Grand Global Winner; accommodation for the whole stay in Africa (6 nights); and activities, transportation, as well as a guide during the whole stay.

Eligibility for the 2019 Metro Photo Challenge

Participants eligible for the Metro Photo Challenge must abide by the following criteria:

• Participants may compete in only one of the countries included in the challenge
• Likewise, each photo may compete only in one category.
• Further, each photo must be in a digital format. Only online entries will be eligible.
• Only minor burning, color filters, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable, as is cropping. However, participants can’t use other photo-editing techniques, such as photomontage, stitched panoramas and collages.

Criteria

During the national round, public voting will decide three winners while local judges will decide the other three winners. However, in the global competition, a global jury will decide the winner of the Metro Photography competition on the basis of the following criteria:

Fit and relevance: to what extent the photo “fits” and is relevant to the category.

Creativity:

• is the subject matter pictured in a unique way or is a common item shown from an interesting point of view?
• does the photo demonstrate originality?

Technical quality

• color and/or tonal rendition
• contrast
• lighting

Overall impression

• does the photo grab the viewer’s attention and hold it?
• Also, does it have the “wow” factor? Are there any special effects or extras?

How to participate in 2019 Metro Photo Challenge

Participants may only submit digital photographs in the Metro Photo Challenge. Moreover, the participants must register before they can submit their photographs. After completing the registration, the participants may upload the photographs online.

Deadline

Round one runs from October 1, 2019, to November 28, 2019 (participation phase). In phase one, each local jury will select one photo, one per category, based on the judging criteria. Candidates submitting photographs after November 28, 2019, are, however, unacceptable.
