The World Health Organization, more commonly as WHO, invites students to participate in the paid Summer Internship Program on Social Protection in Dakar, Senegal. The intern will serve in the Social Protection Unit, Regional Bureau Dakar for the period of at least 3 months from May/June to August/ September 2020.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The incumbent will perform the following duties under the direct supervision of the Programme Policy Officer of the Social Protection Unit

• Prepare short case studies on WFP support to national SP systems and social safety nets in West Africa. This can include shock-responsive or nutrition-sensitive SP, SP connection with school feeding programs or resilience programs in the Sahel, etc.
• Similarly, the intern will prepare a sharp and impactful summary/advocacy documents to support advocacy and fundraising by country and regional offices.
• Doing data workaround WFP SP engagement in West Africa, based on available data sources, including for example WFP M&E data.
• Furthermore, s/he will perform other duties in support of ongoing workstreams (analytical, operational) and day-to-day work of the unit.

Requirements 

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications

• Current enrollment in a master’s degree program OR a recent graduate of a master’s degree (graduated within the last 6 months
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook) as well as good data skills (Stata, impact evaluation methodologies).
• Excellent English verbal and writing skills; Proficiency in French.
• Good economic and econometric knowledge.
• Proven analytical skills and also the ability to produce high quality written documents.
• Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) and French is necessary.

Learning Outcomes 

The candidate will have an opportunity to collect knowledge and learn the following things

• Deep knowledge of national social protection and safety net systems in West Africa
• Understanding of good practices on nutrition-sensitive, shock-responsive SP, social registries, etc. and dissemination across the organization.
• Strengthened capacities to write and structure clear argumentation (qualitative dimension) and also analyze and convincingly present data (quantitative dimension).
• Furthermore, the general understanding of WFP overall operations.

Stipend and Funding

The PD Summer Internship Programme 2020 – Social Protection is a paid position. The intern will be eligible for the monthly stipend of approximately USD US$ 790 per month as a contribution to basic subsistence costs. In addition to that, WFP will reimburse travel tickets for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
