Human Rights Watch calls application for Multimedia Internship 2020

The Multimedia Division at Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking undergraduate and graduate students in journalism, film, or related fields to be Multimedia interns for the Summer 2020 semester in the New York office. Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, training, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Benefits 

The salary for this position is USD 15.00 per hour. Human Rights Watch offers twenty (20) days of vacation prorated per year pursuant to the work schedule and length of employment. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with the other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Key Responsibilities 

The intern will learn and be exposed to:

  • All aspects of the video production workflow.
  • Team meetings, video production discussions, and digital/social media strategy discussions.
  • Researcher interviews in the multimedia studio.
  • Multimedia content management and content distribution systems.
  • Researching content to use in multimedia publications.
  • Video and photo editing process.
  • Drafting scripts for full-length and social media videos.

Responsibilities

In order to be eligible for this Multimedia Internship in Human Rights Watch, candidates must have

  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate/graduate program for the duration of the internship term is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Strong interest in human rights work, journalism, video production, and photography is highly desirable.
  • Some knowledge or experience using video production tools and/or experience in a newsroom environment is a plus.
