Applications call for Development and Outreach Internship (Student Task Force) at the Human Rights Watch. Moreover, the Student Task Force (“STF”) is a youth leadership-training program that brings together high school students from all over Los Angeles and empowers them to advocate for the rights of children. HRW interns and STF teachers partner together to mentor students in leadership skills and activism, fostering confidence and maturity among students and enabling them to become effective voices for change and social justice within their communities.

The STF internship offers a substantive learning opportunity for the selected students. The Los Angeles office is currently seeking two STF interns. The selected candidates must be available from mid-January until late-May 2021. Interns should work up to 15 hours per week and must be available on Tuesdays from 10:00am-11:00am (mandatory STF team meeting). The remaining internship hours should be completed some point Monday-Thursday during office hours.

Learning Outcome

Students will also have opportunities to attend virtual lectures, training, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Tasks

The STF internship may include the following projects:

  • Researching, creating and organizing advocacy opportunities for the STF campaigns that focus on children’s rights issues and human rights education.
  • Liaising with local student leaders and faculty advisors.
  • Researching and organizing human rights education resources and materials.
  • Also, researching and implementing strategies and tools to equip students to be knowledgeable and effective human rights activists.
  • Furthermore, contributing to some office-related tasks.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students for the duration of the internship term.
  • Should be well-organized, attentive to detail, self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in human rights, especially children’s human rights and/or human rights education.
  • Experience in the U.S. K-12 academic system. Experience with advocacy and working with volunteers is highly desirable.
  • Academic background in political science, international studies, or global studies is a plus.
  • Computer skills (i.e. MS Word, MS Excel, and internet applications) are necessary.
  • Experience with graphic design, web design, social media and online communication tools preferred.

Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch is an international non-profitable organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights. Basically, the group pressures some governments, policymakers and human rights abusers to denounce abuse and respect human rights; and the group often works on behalf of refugees, children, migrants, and political prisoners. It has a headquarter in the Empire State Building in New York City, United States of America.

COVID-19 Notice 

Due to COVID-19, many of our offices remain closed or are open at a limited capacity. HRW prioritizes the safety of our interns. In locations that have eased office restrictions and are open at a limited capacity; interns are not expected to report to the office and remote arrangements will remain an option for the foreseeable future. However, interns may have the option of reporting to an office on a voluntary basis in accordance with HRW’s COVID-19 policies.
