Applications are open for Environment Affairs Internship at UN in Beirut, Lebanon. This internship is located within Subprogramme 1: “Integrated management of natural resources for sustainable development” of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA – unescwa.org). The intern reports directly to the Director of the Subprogramme, and/or to senior staff of the Subprogramme with respective/delegated authority.

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis – this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following functions

  • Assist in substantive research and reviews related to the work of the Subprogramme, in the areas of Sustainable Development, Water, Climate Change, Energy, Environment, Food Security/Agriculture, and/or Green Technology.
  • Contribute to background notes, talking points and policy briefs for activities related to the Subprogramme.
  • Support all activities of the Subprogramme, both substantively and administratively.
  • Assist in other ad-hoc activities in the Subprogramme, when necessary, as instructed by the supervisor.

Academic Requirements

To be eligible for this Environment Affairs Internship at UN (Western Asia)

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

Other Requirements

  • Computer literate in standard software applications, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • A demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • A demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.
  • For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is necessary. Knowledge of Arabic and French is desirable.
