Summary

The Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University launched in August 2017 and seeks an Engineering Labs and Studio Specialist to assist with the maintenance and operations of teaching labs and studios, research labs, and a new makerspace and machine shop. Also, the Engineering Lab and Studio Specialist will be expected to support the Engineering Lab and Studio Manager with all activities related to engineering facility operations. Such activities will include equipment acquisition and maintenance, establishing a culture of safety, training of personnel on the use of engineering equipment and facilities, managing student workers, and other activities to sustain operations across a wide range of engineering projects to support teaching and research. Additionally, a successful applicant could start as early as July 1, 2021.

Functions:

• Support teaching labs and studios, research labs, and innovation workspace (machine shop and makerspace)
• Moreover, maintain accurate and complete equipment and material inventories for labs and studios. Organization and documentation are critical as the Department builds out and works to create a strong foundation from which to grow.
• Collaborate with engineering faculty and students to specify, purchase, and organize equipment, furniture, tools, and supplies for engineering spaces.
• Also, responsible for safety training and compliance for spaces and personnel through WFU Environmental Health & Safety and external entities, as necessary.
• Coordinate planning, maintenance, and repair for functional equipment in engineering spaces.
• Consult with vendors on new products and benchmark programs at peer institutions to keep up-to-date on the latest technologies and techniques in engineering.
• Similarly, support and train undergraduate students as studio and lab assistants.
• Additionally, assist with design of new experiments and project experiences for undergraduate courses.
• Provide training workshops for students and faculty to learn new equipment or tools.

Abilities:

• A bachelors’ degree or higher in a technical or related field, and work experience in industrial or academic setting.
• A desire to mentor engineering students and to help them develop “hands-on” technical skills.
• Also, ability to work with students from a range of backgrounds and skill levels.
• Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
• Additionally, ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations and department needs.
• Likewise, proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and online ordering programs.
• Technical background in building electrical circuits and trouble shooting
• Proficiency in Linux/UNIX operating systems
