Job Summary
The IU Auditorium head carpenter is responsible for the coordination and oversight of the backstage / production-related components of all events presented and hosted by IU Auditorium. Likewise, reporting to the technical director, the head carpenter submits and ensures all hourly stagehand calls are filled, acts as job steward/HR rep for hourly stagehand staff, supervises load-ins/outs and events, and prepares labor and expense summaries. Also, this position serves as an advisor to the other three full-time Auditorium stagehand staff members as needed and acts as a contributing member of the technical staff team for a given production/event.
Duties:
- Maintains the highest standard of production values possible.
- Reviews and implements necessary event-related requirements communicated via event planning documents, backstage documents, and production / events meetings.
- Similarly, submits hourly stagehand calls sheets to local IATSE business agent per technical director schedules, ensuring all calls are filled and alerting technical director of any concerns.
- Also, assists technical director with event-related purchasing requisitions and purchase orders as needed.
- Acts as job steward / HR rep for part-time hourly stagehand staff, supervising house hangs, events, and load-ins/outs. Takes appropriate action and/or alerts technical director of any safety concerns. Facilitates training and instruction as needed.
- Additionally, attends rehearsals and events. Operates, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment as necessary. Serve as a liaison between visiting artists/staff/clients and Auditorium staff, escalating concerns to the Technical Director as needed.
- Serves as primary on-site point of contact for backstage meals and hospitality catering. Coordinates setup needs, building access, and schedule coordination.
- Likewise, prepares event backstage labor and expense summaries and detail for event settlements, billings, and payroll processing.
- Assists and coordinates maintenance of production equipment and stage-related facilities. Maintains inspection records for counterweight system, fire curtain, and rigging equipment. Maintains list of production-related equipment and facility needs. Manages backstage supply restock. Assists with equipment purchases.
- Moreover, maintains familiarity with all systems utilized in Auditorium-managed facilities, monitors and consults with IU Control Center regarding infrastructure alerts; and functions as on-site / building rep for issues that require immediate action.
Demands
- This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations.
- Also, the role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases, and to operate machinery, tools, and controls.
- Likewise, the role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections.
