Title: Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor of English and Humanities

Position Summary

This regular faculty appointment is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track faculty position, one-year, three-year renewable, with the potential to be converted to a multi-year position. Also, teaching responsibilities include a four/four teaching load consisting of both introductory and upper-level pre-undergraduate and undergraduate courses, with the potential to optionally teach graduate classes in our various Master’s programs.

Additionally, depending upon enrollments and course availability, faculty may also be offered optional summer courses for supplementary income. In addition to teaching and mentoring, AUAF faculty responsibilities include scholarship and university service.

Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty fulfill the roles and responsibilities described in the Faculty Handbook and university policies and procedures that detail specific faculty duties. Major responsibilities are listed below.

Teaching and Mentoring

  • Teach Composition (Academic Writing, Research/Argument, Advanced Composition, Technical Writing,), and, when possible, Social Sciences and Humanities courses as part of the University’s Core Curriculum, or courses contributing to the Minor in Literature.
  • Additionally, teach four undergraduate or graduate courses (12 credits) per term, evaluating student work, and assessing student learning outcomes.
  • Furthermore, hold regular office hours and work with individual students, acting as an academic mentor.
  •  Likewise, remain engaged and current in the academic profession and their disciplines.

Scholarship

• Remain scholarly active, contributing scholarship that goes beyond professional engagement to include the creation of intellectual products that are available to internal and/or external audiences.

Qualifications/Skills for Vacancy for Associate Professor

  • Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric, Literature, Comparative Literature (or other closely related subjects); English MA with extensive experience teaching at the college level with a proven track record of teaching undergraduate composition, research/argument, and literature may be considered.
  • Similarly, significant teaching experience in western higher education and evidence of excellence in university teaching.
  • Also, excellent oral and written English skills
  • Publications and evidence of professional engagement.
  • Likewise, experience teaching in international, multicultural, developing, and/or post-conflict settings preferred.
  • Also, a strong sense of values and ethics, consistent with the mandate of the American University of Afghanistan.
  • Furthermore, demonstrated experience with a learning management system, Canvas preferred
  •  Fluency in Dari Farsi or Pashto is desirable, or willingness to learn one of the local languages of Afghanistan
  •  Also, additional preferred qualification is the experience of coordinating a university writing program.
