Job Summary
The Department of Aerospace Engineering is seeking well-qualified applicants for the position of HR Generalist. As a key member of the Aerospace administrative team, the HR Generalist is responsible for performing a wide range of HR-related duties and working closely with our faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Also, the ideal candidate is an experienced HR professional who can exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgment in managing the day-to-day administrative responsibilities for all Aerospace HR activities. Likewise, he/she should be an effective communicator, adept at utilizing data systems and technology, self-directed. Additionally, highly organized and accurate, collaborative, dependable, adaptable, and have a strong work ethic.
Duties:
- Act as department liaison to the College of Engineering (CoE) and University central offices for HR-related matters.
- Similalry, serve as the first point-of-contact for Aerospace staff, supervisors, faculty, lecturers, students, and visitors for all HR activities and questions.
- Initiate and manage all HR Personnel Action Request (PAR) transactions. Ensure all HR data in the M-Pathways HR system is current and accurate.
- Develop, implement, and maintain department HR policies, procedures, and relevant documents.
- Moreover, manage staff directories, MCommunity groups, and HR information on the Aerospace intranet.
- Collect, analyze, and summarize HR data to assist in strategic direction and informed decision-making.
- Likewise, collaborate with relevant staff on internal control issues and policies related to HR, including assisting with the annual gap analysis.
- Monitor the academic term and fiscal year effort certification processes for employees and ensure timely compliance.
- Additionally, advise and process CoE visiting scholars via the CoE visitor registry system.
- Ensure department compliance with UM’s Children on Campus procedures and policies, including initiating background checks and monitoring training.
- Manage the full spectrum of recruitment and hiring processes for all regular and temporary staff, faculty, research faculty, research fellows, lecturers, student temporary employees, and graduate students.
- Monitor and manage appointments, including identifying the need and appropriateness of extensions and terminations in a timely manner.
- Furthermore, develop, implement, and evaluate orientation/onboarding and exit/off-boarding processes for department personnel and maintain a confidential record retention process for departmental files.
- Collaborate with the Graduate Student Services Coordinator and financial staff to effectively manage appointments and funding information for graduate students in the College of Engineering’s Student Information Center (SIC) system.
- Also, assist with navigating the employment of foreign nationals with supervisors. When necessary, process and coordinate the paperwork process between employees, Shared Services Center, and the International Center.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of progressive experience working in human resources in higher education.
- Also, extensive knowledge and application of HR concepts and practices.
- Similarly, strong critical thinking skills and ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise appropriate discretion and confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent follow-through.
- Likewise, demonstrated ability to set priorities and successfully handle multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and diplomatically with faculty, staff, and students under a variety of circumstances.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate accurate information in a welcoming, professional, and effective manner using a variety of channels, such as in-person meetings and presentations, phone, email, and teleconferencing.
- Also, high level of proficiency and accuracy with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Suite software and Google documents, forms, and spreadsheets. Ability to navigate web-based systems and quickly learn and adapt to changing technology.
- Ability to work independently, exercise a high level of resourcefulness, and also collaborate effectively as part of a diverse team.
- Moreover, demonstrated ability to identify opportunities to streamline processes, procedures, and duties and successfully implement them.
- Demonstrated success in working in a fast-paced environment that requires flexibility and adaptability.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or other relevant fields
- Knowledge of University policy and procedures
- Also, proficiency with the University M-Pathways HR and timekeeping systems
- Experience working in a higher education academic unit
- Furthermore, familiarity with the College of Engineering’s Student Information (SIC) system
