Summary

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University has an immediate opening for a Research Technologist I in support of the Rockets for Extended-source X-ray Spectroscopy (tREXS). tREXS I is a sub-orbital rocket payload that is expected to launch in 2021 and will observe the Cygnus Loop Supernova Remnant. The tREXS instrument, a soft X-ray spectrometer, consists of passive, mechanical beam-shaping optics, arrays of reflection gratings, and an extended focal plane of CMOS sensors.

The Research Technologist will assist the PSU team with general lab tasks and integrating the rocket payload. Additional tasks will include

  • Implementing a data handling pipeline
  • Additionally, operating the instrument detectors
  • Also, interfacing instrument electronics with payload telemetry systems
  • Likewise, designing software interfaces and control GUIs for in-flight instrument monitoring.

Requirements for Vacancy for Research Technician

  • Experience with sub-orbital rockets or equivalent flight programs
  • Also, demonstrated ability to work in laboratory and cleanroom environments
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, and MATLAB programming languages and with Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Likewise, experience designing and implementing data-handling systems
  • Also, experience developing user-friendly GUI control and visualization systems
  • Analysis of scientific-grade detector data
  • Additionally, the ability to work in a team setting and on independent projects
