Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will have the following responsibilities:

  • Monitors economic developments in a defined area and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the United Nations.
  • Designs and conducts studies on selected and assigned issues in economic development and draft resulting reports for use by the Executive Secretary (ES).
  • Also, interprets and applies results of econometric modelling to analysis of economic prospects and policies for Executive Secretary’s participation at events.
  • Additionally, develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work.
  • Furthermore, formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for the Executive Secretary, liaising closely with relevant Divisions.
  • Moreover, prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising national governments on economic development issues
  • Similarly, contributes to the planning and organizing of the events involving OES, and the Executive Secretary’s participation in global and regional high-level meetings and, as required, provide substantive backstopping to the ES during the meetings.
  • Moreover, prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by Executive Secretary.
  • Also, provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies.

  • Professionalism: Ability to apply economic theories and concepts in different sectors of economic and sustainable development. Also, ability to conduct independent research on economic topics, determine suitability, validity and accuracy of data provided by different sources. Additionally, ability to identify and develop sources for data collection. Furthermore, takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
  • Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Also, identifies priority activities and assignment. Additionally, allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Furthermore, foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
  • Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honors commitments; delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards, Also, operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules. Similarly, supports subordinates, provides oversight. Furthermore, takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. A first-level or advanced degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in any fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree in the specified fields of studies.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programs or related area is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in either language is required. Knowledge of the other language is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
