Duties

The incumbent does the following duties

• Identifies research topics and undertakes substantive research and policy analysis in the area of economic development in Africa for inclusion in annual reports to the Trade and Development Board
• Additionally, prepares background papers and notes on African development issues including regional, national or sectoral analysis
• Monitors and reports on UNCTAD-wide activities as it relates to Africa in the areas of policy research and analysis, technical cooperation and advisory services, and keeps abreast of current academic literature on African development, including through contacts with international and African research institutions and universities
• Provides advice on the choice of experts, participates in the organization of expert group meetings and contributes to public outreach activities with regard to UNCTAD’s research findings and recommendations on African development issues.
• Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others.
• Attends international, regional, and national meetings and to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions.
• Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on African development issues.
• Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.

Qualifications for Vacancy for Economics Affairs Officer at United Nations in Switzerland

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field.
  Additionally, specialization in international or development economics is desirable. Ph.D. in economics or related area is desirable.
• Also, the organization may accept a first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
• Additionally, a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required.
• Experience related to the economic development challenges in Africa is desirable.
• Similarly,  experience in regional integration in Africa is desirable.
• Furthermore, experience in the trade, investment or commodities is desirable.
