Duties

The incumbent will do the following duties

  • Ensures the effective and efficient day-to-day functioning of the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC) Watch Room, directs, coordinates and supervises the work of Reporting Officers in the Watch Room while on duty. Also, compiles and publishes one in three UNOCC Daily
  • Reports, in coordination with the Watch Room Manager and Deputy Manager.
  • Also, the incumbent ensures that human rights information and analysis are integrated into and properly presented in UNOCC products: proposes and drafts specific human rights analytical products.
  • Likewise, he/she reviews, monitors, and evaluates activities relating to the implementation of international human rights instruments.

  • The Officer supports the work of treaty-established bodies and extra-conventional mechanisms and special procedures.
  • He/she prepares relevant human rights parts of reports for the UNOCC, etc. notes on the status of ratification of human rights instruments, etc.
  •  Additionally, the candidate meets regularly with the team including UN staff, national officials as well as Military and Police officers to plan projects and review project activities.
  • The incumbent works with UN and non-governmental programs in the country/region to integrate human rights, including their gender dimensions in their programs.

Qualifications for Vacancy for Human Rights Officer at UN in the USA

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or related field. Additionally, the UN may accept a first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area।
Field experience with a United Nations agency or other international organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
