The NPO Asian Institute of Low Carbon Design (AILCD) invites students from all over the world to take part in the 9th AILCD International Student Design Competition. The competition addresses the problem of urban shrinkage in the Mojiko area in Kitakyushu. The competition asks the students to re-design the urban landscape and to make a proposal for a low carbon urban project within this area. Urban shrinkage should be considered as a real problem for the targeted area and the city of Kitakyushu.

The theme of this year is “Less is MOji – REboot the City”.

AILCD International Student Design Competition Winners

A panel of Jury will decide the 10 winners of the AILCD International Student Design Contest. The ultimate winner will receive a cash reward of 50,000 Yen while the first runner up will receive 30,000 Yen. The second runnerup will receive 10,000 Yen. The judges will also reward the remaining 7 winners.

  1. First Prize: 50,000 Yen and a certificate
  2. Second Prize: 30,000 Yen and a certificate
  3. Third Prize: 10,000 Yen and a certificate
  4. 7 Honorable Mentions: Certificate

Eligibility for the AILCD International Student Design Competition

The participants of the AILCD International Student Design Competition must be either undergraduate or postgraduate students. The team of graduate students may be a multidisciplinary team(Master and PhD students). However, the undergraduate students must be from Architecture, Landscape, Civil Engineering and related disciplines.

Individual participants are also welcome to apply. Further, the participants should note that a team/individual may only submit one project.

Participants must base their projects in Mojiko. Moreover, the participants may use the whole area of the city or only one specific part within the same competition site area. All proposals should contain one or more of below features:

  • urban shrinkage
  • low carbon city concept
  • overall sustainable concept
  • green space design
  • usage of renewable energy systems
  • sustainable transport systems
  • connection to the surrounding area

Applying for the AILCD International Student Design Competition

Candidates participating in the 2019 AILCD International Student Design Contest must, at first, register for the competition via email. The email should constitute:

  • names of all participants of your team, individual entries are accepted as well
  • name of the university including the name of faculty and/or department
  • Also, e-mail address of the team’s head student

After confirming registration, the participants will receive a registration number which must be integrated into all boards of the final submission. Moreover, students should note the competition is free to enter (No registration fee required).

After completing registration, candidates may submit their design until the deadline. Note that the official language of the competition is English.

In order to submit the design proposal, candidates must abide by the following rules:

  • Digital form: 4 (four) A2 panels (JPEG files) and 1 (one) PDF file containing the project statement (A4, 2 pages).
  • Panel size: A2 (594mm x 420mm) (landscape format x horizontal orientation)
  • Likewise, the boards should contain project concept, diagrams, plans, sections, perspectives, and photographs
  • Furthermore, entries must contain the registration digit in the lower right corner on all boards (18pt).
  • However, candidates may not use their names or affiliations on the boards.
  • Proposals shall be sent by email while one e-mail should not exceed 10MB (e-mails over 10Mb can’t be retrieved). If the size of the e-mail exceeds 10MB send the files by separated e-mails.
  • Proposals are not accepted after closing date for proposal submissions.

Deadline

Candidates may submit their proposal for the AILCD International Student Design Competition until 1 November 2019. AILCD doesn’t humor applications arriving after the deadline.
