Tara Theatre and Britto Arts Trust are seeking artists from the UK and Bangladesh to make connections and co-create new works.

Tara Theatre is a contemporary and democratic space. It creates innovative, politically charged theatre harnessing the power of co-creation. Their work explores the complexities of our world through a South Asian lens, championing South Asian voices and artists, identifying new narratives, new ideas as well as new forms.

Artforms

Theatre, Live Art, Dance, Music, Sound art, Zines, Performance spoken word, Poetry, Novels, Graphic novels, Text-based art, Film, Photography, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture/Installation, Fashion, Weaving and textiles, Ceramic/Metalwork, Design, Public art.

The Commission

There will be 7 artists each from the UK and Bangladesh matched together to co-create new works. The matchmaking will happen after completing the selection process and will be based on aligning the topic of exploration for the commission.

Moreover, there will be a presentation of the resultant work digitally and across different cities in the UK and Bangladesh in the spring and summer of 2022.

The commission will be awarded to young/emerging artists as an opportunity for them to develop their skills and practice, to enable both a national and international platform for their work and to build connections with peers in both Bangladesh and the UK.

 Benefits

  • 7 commissions of £6000 available to apply for.
  • The commissions will be shared between 1 British artist and 1 Bangladeshi artist who will be paired together.
  • The 2 artists will be responsible (with guidance) for how they spend the £6000 to cover:
    • The 2 artists fees
    • Resources needed to complete the commission
  • However, the £6000 commission does not include production costs for the showcase, which are covered by the British Council in the UK, Bangladesh and online.

Eligibility

  1. early-career artists with 1-5 years of experience
  2. must be based anywhere in the UK and Bangladesh.
  3. Through the support of the Transforming Narratives programme, two of the selected UK artists should be based in Birmingham.
  4. The UK artists may include artists of Bangladeshi heritage as well as those without any prior connection to Bangladesh.
