The Canadian Hillman Prizes honour excellence in journalism in service of the common good. The Hillman Prizes seek out investigative reporting that draws attention to social or economic injustice and leads to meaningful public policy change. They strive to recognize discernment of a significant news story, resourcefulness and courage in reporting, skill in relating the story and the impact of the coverage. Starting in 2024, the foundation now awards three Canadian Hillman Prizes instead of one.
Since 1950, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has honored journalists, writers, and public figures whose work exemplifies investigative journalism and public policy efforts serving the common good. The foundation is named after Sidney Hillman, a pioneering labor leader and social reformer. As the founding president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, a predecessor of Workers United, SEIU, Hillman played a pivotal role in shaping labor movements in the United States. He was a principal architect of the New Deal, advocating for social justice and economic reforms that improved the lives of working people. Hillman believed in a union movement that transcended workplace concerns, addressing broader societal needs and uplifting communities. The foundation’s annual awards celebrate his enduring legacy, recognizing contributions that advance equity, justice, and the dignity of workers in all aspects of life.
