Winter Short Story Award for New Writers is a prize that recognizes the best fiction from today’s emerging writers. The competition is organized by The Masters’ Review, an American literary magazine as well as a book publisher.

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to emerging writers.
  • Self-published writers, as well as writers with story collections, are welcome to submit.
  • Writers with novels published with small circulations (around 5000 copies) can also submit.

Genre

The competition doesn’t have any preferences topically or in terms of style or genre. However, it considers itself a publication that focuses on literary fiction.

Rules

  • You may submit stories under 6,000 words.
  • Only previously unpublished work will be accepted.
  • Moreover, entries should be in English.

Prize

  1. The winning story wins $3000 and publication online.
  2. Second place stories will get awards of publication and $300
  3. Also, third place stories will get awards of publication and $200
  4. In addition, All winning stories as well as any notable Honorable Mentions will receive agency review by the following:

  • Victoria Cappello from The Bent Agency
  • Andrea Morrison from Writers House
  • Sarah Fuentes from Fletcher & Company
  • Heather Schroder from Compass Talent
  • Siohban McBride from Carnicelli Literary Management.

Guidelines

  • You must pay a $20 entry fee 
  • Do not identify information on your story
  • If requesting an editorial letter, please indicate on your cover letter if the submission is fiction or creative nonfiction
  • In addition, a significant portion of the editorial letter fees go to feedback editor
