Applications are open for the WRI/EJN Environmental Data Journalism Workshop 2019.  To help journalists and decision-makers find, visualize and share the best available data on the environment. Also,  human development, the World Resources Institute (WRI) created Resource Watch. On this platform, you can find data and maps on deforestation, coral reef bleaching, coastal flooding, crops, fishing, fires. Also, other natural disasters, population numbers, oil spills, air quality, poverty, power plants, human migration and much more. You can then overlay them to see interconnections between the issues – all for free.

In partnership with Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Resource Watch is coming to Jakarta to train journalists. Further,  on how to use the Resource Watch platform, showcase tools and tips for data analysis. Also, to reveal best practices for working with open data and highlight the value of incorporating data into stories. Workshop participants will have the ability to apply for funding to produce data-driven narrative stories using the tools and data available on Resource Watch.

Eligibility

  • Open to Indonesian journalists based in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, or Bekasi;
  • Applicants agree to commit to attending all days of the workshop;
  • To have a record of reporting on scientific, environmental, natural resource management and/or infrastructural development topics;
  • Experience with data and data analysis is preferred but not required;
  • If you produce stories for your home media organizations as a result of your attendance at the workshop, be willing to post copies of them on Earth Journalism Network website, Equatorial website and the Resource Watch blog;
  • A letter from your editor or media outlet supporting your application (freelancers are welcome but must have a letter of support from a media organization that will publish or broadcast your stories).

Application process

Please be aware that:

  • You will have to submit your CV and two samples of stories or links to relevant reports, so please get them ready beforehand.
  • You will not receive an email confirmation.
  • Applications submitted after the deadline time and date below will not be considered.
