Centre for Advanced Study Sofia invites application for a fully funded Spring School in the framework of the international research program in Bulgaria.

The Spring school avails research discussion on archaeological theory and practice, The Construction of Knowledge in Archaeology and Art History in Southeastern Europe, funded by the Getty Foundation as part of its Connecting Art Histories Initiative and hosted by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia. The school aims to explore the regional intellectual potential for change in archaeological theory and practice over the course of three years; further, the program envisages an opportunity to discuss and implement the research directions archaeologists active in the region wish to follow, and the implications such a paradigm shift might have for the ways the region’s past is understood.

Fully Funded Spring School in Bulgaria

The Spring School is fully funded. The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia covers all the costs of the successful applicants. The costs include airfare as well as accommodation. Further, the participants will receive a per diem of $43 for the duration of the program.

Eligibility for the Fully Funded CAS Spring School

Centre for Advanced Study Sofia considers a candidate eligible for the Fully Funded Spring School  in Bulgaria if the meet the following requirements:

  • Applications are welcome from doctoral archaeology and art-history students as well as recent PhDs and young faculty members
  • Further, the applicants must be fluent in English.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate an academic and/or professional engagement with archaeology in Southeastern Europe. Also, they must have an active interest in archaeological theory and practice.

Successful applicants must attend all lectures, workshops, group discussions, gallery classes, and any other School meeting or event, as well as present a 20′-paper of their own at the junior scholar’s colloquium.

How to apply for the 2020 CAS Spring School?

Prospective applicants should send their queries and application materials for the fully funded Spring School in Bulgaria to Milena Varzonovtseva. The application should constitute:

  • a personal statement of up to 1000 words detailing their research, as well as their reasons for wishing to attend. CAS expects applicants’ research aligns with the theme of the school.
  • Likewise, a recent cv
  • Further, a copy of their most recent degree in archaeology, art history or a related discipline;
  • Also an abstract of up to 500 words of the specific paper they wish to present at the colloquium.

Deadline

CAS accepts the application for the fully funded 2020 Spring School in Bulgaria until the deadline on 15 December 2019. The Centre will notify the successful applicants by 15 January 2020.
