The WIPO Summer Schools provide an opportunity for university students and young professionals to acquire a deeper knowledge of IP. Also, how it can be used as a tool for sustainable development, as well as the role of WIPO in the administration and the provision of global IP services.

All Summer Schools share a common curriculum, format, and duration, though some offer different degrees. Which are of specialization in certain areas of IP. Further, participants are to various aspects of IP, including the international nature of IP protection and the interface between IP and other disciplines.

The program takes an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented approach through the following methodologies:

  • lectures;
  • simulation exercises;
  • group discussions on selected IP topics;
  • panel discussions; and
  • case studies.

A certificate of participation is to participants who successfully complete the program requirements.

Cost and Scholarship

  • Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from various destinations, as well as their accommodation. Also,  living expenses during their participation in the program.
  • Likewise, scholarships are available for international participants to the Summer Schools taking place in the Republic of Korea (ROK) and South Africa through the funds from the Governments of ROK and Japan, respectively. Scholarships include travel costs.
  • Non-resident participants will be provided with insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in connection with the Summer School program. Also, each participant will be to present a medical certificate upon arrival.

Eligibility

  • The Summer School is open to approximately 50 senior students (graduate and postgraduate) and young professionals from any field of study or discipline. The program is for candidates who are already familiar with IP.
  • Candidates are to successfully complete a session of the Academy’s General Course on Intellectual Property (DL-101) online. Dates for the session will be publish. Special distance learning (DL) courses for Summer Schools will also be announced.

Application

Applicants should submit their résumé together with a letter of motivation (setting out their reasons for applying and what they hope to gain from the Summer School). Selected applicants will be notified two weeks after the registration deadline.
