Duties and Responsibilities of the Civil Engineer Specialist Internship
Based at the UNDP sub-office in Solomon Islands, the Civil Engineer Specialist will work under the supervision of the AMOS-RD Project Manager, collaborating with the Chief Technical Advisor and PMU team. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting assessments and field visits to provide technical solutions for infrastructure projects.
- Supporting design, costing, and preparation of technical documents such as TORs, BoQs, and cost estimates.
- Coordinating with local stakeholders and monitoring social and environmental risks associated with construction works.
- Overseeing construction and rehabilitation projects to ensure compliance with national standards and UNDP policies.
- Reviewing technical documents, ensuring alignment with national laws, and assisting in tender processes.
- Contributing to capacity building through training, knowledge sharing, and the development of SOPs.
- Supervising the work of consultant engineers and temporary project personnel.
The role also involves contributing to knowledge networks and ensuring efficient project implementation.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or other related fields is required, or
- A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the areas mentioned above in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years (with master’s degree) or 7 years (with bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible relevant experience in design, oversee and quality assure construction interventions
- Proven understanding in construction of meteorological infrastructure and/ or equipment.
- Excellent usage of computers and office software packages, including engineering design software is required.
- Familiarity with national legislation, norms and standards related to construction works
- Experience in managing social and environmental safeguards in construction industry.
- Nationals or others legally authorized to work in the Solomon Islands are eligible.
- A valid driver’s license is a requirement.
- Prior experience with the UNDP or another UN Agency or International Organization.
- Experience and excellent knowledge of technical specifications of meteorological systems.
- Previous experience in community engagement and consultations in relation to construction works.
Required languages:
- Fluency in English and Pidgin is required.
