The Environment and Human Rights Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) invites application for the Internship program. The division is seeking a law student, graduate-level LL.M. student, or graduate student in a relevant field with a demonstrated interest in the environment and international human rights. Moreover, the ideal candidate will be based in New York and will be available September through December 2019 (dates and times are flexible).

Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with the other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, training, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

What will the Environment & Human Rights Intern do at Human Rights Watch?

The Environment & Human Rights intern will undertake responsibilities that include:

  • Conducting background desk research on a range of environmental rights issues, including toxic pollution, climate change, and protecting environmental defenders;
  • Monitoring media coverage of HRW research projects, tracking new developments related to environmental rights issues, and reviewing laws and policies;
  • Drafting documents including, but not limited to advocacy letters and background material for reports and other publications; and
  • Other projects may be assigned as they arise and match the intern’s interests and abilities.

Who is eligible for the Environment & Human Rights Internship at HRW?

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable candidates;
  • Previous experience conducting desk research is preferred;
  • Interest and/or experience in the environmental field with an understanding of, as well as a strong interest in international human rights;
  • Coursework in environmental health, human rights, law, and/or policy; and
  • Internet research and computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office, internet applications).
